Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Burns Night Supper, hosted by His Britannic Majesty’s Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Fergus Auld, at the British Embassy in Baku. This event was not just a dinner; it was a cultural immersion into one of Scotland’s most cherished traditions, celebrating the life and legacy of the national poet, Robert Burns.
Burns Night is a significant event in Scottish culture, held annually on or around January 25th, the birthday of Robert Burns. Known for his poetry that resonates deeply with themes of love, freedom, and humanity, Burns remains a literary icon more than two centuries after his time. The supper is a lively gathering featuring traditional Scottish music, poetry recitations, and, of course, haggis—the dish immortalized in Burns’ famous poem, Address to a Haggis.
From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and camaraderie. The evening began with a formal welcome by Ambassador Fergus Auld, setting the tone for an engaging and vibrant celebration. As the night unfolded, we enjoyed live bagpipe music, poetry readings, and heartfelt toasts, all paying tribute to Burns and his enduring influence on literature and culture.
One of the highlights was witnessing the traditional “Address to a Haggis”, where the dish was brought in with great ceremony, accompanied by music and enthusiastic recitations. The dinner itself featured classic Scottish dishes, including haggis, “neeps” (turnips), “tatties” (potatoes), and the delicious Cranachan dessert.
Beyond the cultural experience, the evening provided a wonderful networking opportunity, bringing together a diverse group of diplomats, business leaders, and individuals who share an appreciation for Scottish heritage. It was inspiring to see the strong ties between Scotland and Azerbaijan reflected in such a meaningful event.
A heartfelt thank you to His Excellency Fergus Auld and the British Embassy in Baku for their exceptional hospitality. Burns Night in Baku was a memorable experience, reminding me of the power of tradition in fostering global connections.
